John 1:28
They asked him,
"Why then do you baptize
if you are not the Christ or Elijah or the Prophet?"
John answered them,
"I baptize with water;
but there is one among you whom you do not recognize,
the one who is coming after me,
whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie."
This happened in Bethany across the Jordan,
where John was baptizing.

John the Baptist knew that Jesus was the Son of God. This knowledge John received from the Holy Spirit. John remained completely humble even though at that time he was considered by the people to be a mighty prophet. When John a great prophet is unworthy to untie the sandal of Jesus where do we stand before God ? Humility and love become necessary in order to approach Divinity.
