Thought for the day ..... 1.1.2012

Wish You All a Very Happy New Year !

Solemnity of Mary, The Holy Mother of God

Numbers 6:22-27

The LORD said to Moses:
"Speak to Aaron and his sons and tell them:
This is how you shall bless the Israelites.
Say to them:
The LORD bless you and keep you!
The LORD let his face shine upon
you, and be gracious to you!
The LORD look upon you kindly and
give you peace!
So shall they invoke my name upon the Israelites,
and I will bless them.

Galations 4:4-7

As proof that you are sons,
God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts,
crying out, "Abba, Father!"
So you are no longer a slave but a son,
and if a son then also an heir, through God.

Luke 2:16-21

And Mary kept all these things,
reflecting on them in her heart.
Then the shepherds returned,
glorifying and praising God
for all they had heard and seen,
just as it had been told to them.

Today’s Feast of "Mary, the Mother of God" is a very appropriate way to begin a new year. This celebration reminds us that the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, is also our Heavenly Mother.  Hence, our ideal motto for the New Year 2012 should be “Through Mary to Jesus!" The church observes this day also as the World Day of Peace and invites us specially to pray for peace in the world. The church celebrates this day as the world day of peace and invites us specially to pray for peace in the world.  In the   first reading from the book of Numbers God gives Moses and Aaron the formula of Divine blessing they should use while blessing the Israelites.  In the second reading Paul reminds Galatians that God’s Son has become one of us through Mary and it was  through him that they have become the children of God. Today’s gospel describes how the Shepherds spread to all their neighbors the good news surrounding the birth of Jesus revealed to them by the angel and how Mary treasures them all in her heart.  The Gospel also tells us that on the day of circumcision the Child was given the name Jesus that was chosen by God himself.

Mary’s real name was Miriam. She spoke Aramaic with a Galilean accent. Like the other women of her time, she was probably an illiterate, hard-working and healthy village girl, who labored in the field and in the kitchen. She knew her Hebrew prayers and understood some words and expressions in Greek and Latin, as these were used in Galilee by the Roman soldiers and the Greek merchants and pilgrims.  She might have been fair-skinned, dark haired and dark eyed. At the time of annunciation she was probably thirteen or fourteen. Joseph might have been a young man or a widower with children. In villages like Nazareth, four or five related families lived in adjacent houses around an inner courtyard. Mary gave birth to Jesus, probably in B.C. 6 and she was below fifty and a widow when her son Jesus was crucified. After remaining in Nazareth for a few years, sharing the bitter experiences of the early Christian community, she might have moved to Ephesus along with John and died there. Jesus’ brothers and sisters mentioned in the gospel were either children of Mary’s sisters or the children of Joseph’s brothers or even children of Joseph by an earlier marriage. Mary can easily identify herself with the poor and the oppressed and their hardships and aspirations, as she was part of that peasant community which was forced to pay taxes to the Romans, to Herod the king and to the Temple (tithes). The Holy Family belonged to the working class.

Let us strive to be pure and holy like our heavenly Mother.  All mothers want their children to inherit or acquire their good qualities. Our heavenly Mother is no exception.  She succeeded in training the Child Jesus, so that He grew in holiness and in “favor before God and man.” Hence, our best way of celebrating this feast and honoring our heavenly Mother would be to promise her that we will practice her virtues of faith, obedience, purity and humble service. In this way, we will be trying to become the saintly sons and daughters of our heavenly Mother, the holy Mother of God. Like Mary let us learn to say " Yes " to God's will at all times in our life.

The following story about New Year resolutions  makes interesting reading .........

Deciding to jump: A boy asked his father, "Dad, if three frogs were sitting on a limb that hangs over a pool, and one frog decided to jump off into the pool, how many frogs would be left on the limb?"

The dad replied, "Two."

"No," the son replied. “Here is the question again: There are three frogs and one decided to jump, how many are left?"

The dad said, "Oh, I get the point! If one decided to jump, the others would too. So there are none left."

The boy said, "No dad, the answer is three. The frog only DECIDED to jump."

Does that sound like our last year’s resolutions?  Great inspiration and great resolutions, but oftentimes we only decide, and months later we are still on the same limb of do-nothing.

Let us make meaningful resolutions that are easy to live-by with God's abundant grace.Whatever the situation in which we find ourselves - be it a hardship, or a bitter disappointment, or a difficult decision to make - God has a perfect solution, an answer that is right for us. We tell God about it in prayer but we also listen to what God has to tell us about it. Prayer is a conversation with God but sometimes all we do is pick up the phone, read out the list of our problems to God and drop the phone without listening to hear what God has to say to us. Let us today resolve to listen more to the voice of God, to treasure God's word and ponder it in our hearts. Then shall we be able to realize our new year resolution of a new life in union with God. May be, we can resolve to read the Bible systematically everyday in short spells, meditate for a moment on that particular God's Word for us and seek his grace and wisdom  to obey His Word sincerely.

Once again wish you a happy New Year !

God Bless.

DAILY MEDITATIONS  #35, Saturday, 31.12.11

1 John 2:18-21

But you have the anointing that comes from the Holy One,
and you all have knowledge.

John 1:1-18

But to those who did accept him
he gave power to become children of God,
to those who believe in his name,
who were born not by natural generation
nor by human choice nor by a man's decision
but of God.
From his fullness we have all received,
grace in place of grace,
because while the law was given through Moses,
grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
No one has ever seen God.
The only-begotten Son, God, who is at the Father's side,
has revealed him.

Finally the year 2011 has come to a close. We thank the Lord for all the blessings he has showered upon us and for the strength he has provided to overcome difficulties and troubles. We also thank him for his immense love and faithfulness during all those times he remained with us when we were down and out;when people failed to understand us ,it was the Good Lord who truly understood and consoled us. It was Jesus who encouraged us to get up once more and face the world fearlessly whenever we stumbled and fell into the muck.He washed us clean with his love and kept holding our feeble hands till the end.To such a great loving God we humbly bow down and worship.
The Gospel reading pointedly says that to all those who believed in his Son Jesus Christ, God gave the power to become children of God. This is the greatest gift God has given us through his only begotten son Jesus Christ. We have received God's power to become his children by faith and God wants us to exercise in faith this spiritual power he has bestowed upon us so that  our lives become transformed for healing this hurting world. This  'power ' we receive and exercise through the Holy Spirit abiding in us. When this vital fact sinks deeply into our minds then all our New Year resolutions will become meaningful and successful. When we become children of God  we are born-again in the spirit and this birth takes place  "not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man's decision but of God."  Hence we enter the New Year with hearts full of hope and joy.

Let this New Year 2012  for each one of us be a blessed year with all our dreams fulfilled through the grace and Spirit of God.

Wish you a very happy and grace-filled New Year 2012.

God Bless

DAILY MEDITATIONS # 34, Friday 30.12.11

Feast of the Holy Family

Luke 2:39-40

When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions
of the law of the Lord,
they returned to Galilee,
to their own town of Nazareth.
The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom;
and the favor of God was upon him.

Jesus Christ was born an incarnation of God. While on earth he was fully divine and fully human. Mary his mother and Joseph his foster father brought up Jesus with love and care according to the precepts of the Bible. Jesus from his early age imbibed from his parents a healthy fear of God and learnt to walk in God's ways and that is why it is recorded in the Gospel that "The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom;
and the favor of God was upon him." Jesus in his human nature was humble and lived under the control of his earthly mother and guardian father.
The grace of God richly dwelt in the Holy Family because they were devout and God-fearing. It is the grace and favor of God that gifts us children and it is the same divine grace together with parental responsibility and prayers that makes the child grow strong in body ,mind and soul.

The Holy Family of Jesus,Mary and Joseph is the role model for every Christian family.

God Bless.

1 John 2:3-11

Beloved:
The way we may be sure that we know Jesus
is to keep his commandments.
Whoever says, "I know him," but does not keep his commandments
is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
But whoever keeps his word,
the love of God is truly perfected in him.
This is the way we may know that we are in union with him:
whoever claims to abide in him ought to walk just as he walked.

Luke 2:22-35

"Lord, now let your servant go in peace;
your word has been fulfilled:
my own eyes have seen the salvation
which you prepared in the sight of every people,
a light to reveal you to the nations
and the glory of your people Israel."

We have to live the way Jesus lived and this has been made possible by the salvation brought about by Jesus by his Life, Death and Resurrection.
It is only by the grace and power of God that we can live a life of unselfish love in this world.

God Bless

Feast of the Holy Innocents, martyrs

1 John.1:5-2:2

But if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with the Father,
Jesus Christ the righteous one.
He is expiation for our sins,
and not for our sins only but for those of the whole world.

Mathew 2:13-18

When Herod realized that he had been deceived by the magi  ( wise men from the East ),
he became furious.
He ordered the massacre of all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity
two years old and under,
in accordance with the time he had ascertained from the magi.

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Innocents. These innocent children unintentionally become martyrs for Christ. Evil knows no reason. It unleashes its fury and wrath even on innocent people. We see this happening all the time around us when innocent people are killed in accidents and in natural disasters, most of which are man-made. But  faith tells us that a  reward awaits all of them from a just and a loving God. God is aware of all these things and is in complete control ; but the only thing is, He allows  these sad and unfortunate things to happen for a reason which for the time being we cannot understand.
Each one of us is precious in the eyes of a loving God, otherwise He would not have sent His only Son to die on the cross for all of us.

God Bless.

Feast of John the Apostle

1John 1: 1-4

What we have seen and heard
we proclaim now to you,
so that you too may have fellowship with us;
for our fellowship is with the Father
and with his Son, Jesus Christ.
We are writing this so that our joy may be complete.

John 20:1a and 2-8

Then the other disciple also went in,
the one who had arrived at the tomb first,
and he saw and believed.

Yesterday we celebrated the feast of the first martyr  St.Stephen and today we celebrate the feast of  the apostle St.John who it is recorded in the Gospel as the first person who believed that Christ rose from the dead. St. John also describes himself in his Gospel as  "the other disciple whom Jesus loved".This is another way of saying that John loved Jesus very much and that is why in his Gospel and in his pastoral letters John gives the greatest importance to the aspect of love in our relations with God and neighbour.
Stephen and John loved Christ very much and were even prepared to lay down their lives for Christ. Stephen proved his love for Christ by his violent death and John proved his love by his life long dedicated and faithful service to Jesus. What counts most is our love for God and neighbour and it is this love which proves that we are having intimate fellowship with God the Father  and  with His son Jesus Christ and with God the Holy Spirit ; Three Divine Persons united in love.

God Bless.

Feast of St. Stephen, first Martyr

Acts 6:8-10,7:54-59

As they were stoning Stephen, he called out
"Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."

Mathew 10;17-22

You will be hated by all because of my name,
but whoever endures to the end will be saved.

Yesterday the church celebrated the joyous occasion of the birth of Jesus Christ and today the church celebrates with joy the death of its first martyr St.Stephen.
Being a christian means remaining faithful to Christ till the end after renouncing self and all forms of pride.Every christian may not be called upon to lay down his life or face persecution for Christ but is very much required to die to self and rise to a new life in Christ.
Today's readings is a hint about Christ's own death on the cross and his glorious Resurrection which events will be commemorated in a few months from today during Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
A christian always has in view his new life in God's kingdom beyond this present life. One who has this mindset is a practical christian and is pleasing to God.

God Bless.

DAILY MEDITATIONS  # 29, Christmas Sunday, 25.12.11

Isaiah 62:1-5

For the LORD delights in you
and makes your land his spouse.
As a young man marries a virgin,
your Builder shall marry you;
and as a bridegroom rejoices in his bride
so shall your God rejoice in you.

Acts 13: 16-17, 22-25

'I have found David, son of Jesse, a man after my own heart;
he will carry out my every wish.'
From this man's descendants God, according to his promise,
has brought to Israel a savior, Jesus.

Mathew 1:18-25

She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus,
because he will save his people from their sins."
All this took place to fulfill
what the Lord had said through the prophet:
Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel,
which means "God is with us."

Acts 10:38

And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

Mathew 9:35

Jesus traveled through all the towns and villages of that area, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed every kind of disease and illness.

Romans  5:8

But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.

What does Christmas mean to the lonely and the stranger ? What does Christmas mean to the  disfigured in the body, mind and soul ? What does Christmas mean to the maimed and mutilated ? What does Christmas mean to those in prison and to those awaiting death penalty ? What does Christmas mean to those deprived of their land and legitimate rights ? What does Christmas mean to those who are terminally ill and for whom death is minutes away ? What does Christmas mean to the childless, the widow and the orphan ? What does Christmas mean to broken families and to those on the brink of divorce ? What does Christmas mean to those who are hungry, naked and shelter-less  in the cold ? What does Christmas mean to the penniless and the bankrupt ? What does Christmas mean to those who are enslaved to addictive habits ? What does Christmas mean to those emotionally hurt and in severe mental pain ? What does Christmas mean to those who are heavily guilt ridden and spiritually sick ?  Christ continues to serve all these  needy persons through each one of us who are blessed to be filled with the joy of Christmas. Christ promises forgiveness of sins and redemption from evil bondage's to all those who place their trust in him. This is what Christmas means to all of us.
Happy Christmas to all !

DAILY MEDITATIONS  # 28, Saturday 24.12.11

I will plant them so that they may dwell in their place
without further disturbance.

2 Samuel 7:1-5,8-12,14-16

"Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;
for he has come to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty Savior,
born of the house of his servant David.
In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace."

Luke 1:67-79

Jesus Christ was sent into world to deliver us from the bondage of sin. The world is a broken place and we are broken individuals because of sin and its consequences. That is the reason why there is no peace in the world. Jesus came to destroy the kingdom of Satan and to free us from the clutches of the evil one. We are too weak to fight Satan and to liberate ourselves and so a divine Savior in human form is necessary.  Christmas is very much about celebrating the victory of Good over Evil. God as our loving Father has initiated the process of redemption in our hearts with the birth of Christ this Christmas season. Hence we welcome the birth of our Savior with great joy.

God Bless

DAILY MEDITATIONS  # 27, Friday 23.12.11

Thus says the Lord GOD:
Lo, I am sending my messenger
to prepare the way before me;       Malachi 3;1

But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid,* Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall name him John. Luke 1;1314

So they made signs, asking his father what he wished him to be called.
He asked for a tablet and wrote, "John is his name,"
and all were amazed.
Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed,
and he spoke blessing God. Luke !:62-64

Zachariah did not believe the message of the angel and so God made him a deaf mute for the time being. When Zachariah wrote the word of God he was immediately  healed and he started praising God. This is the first healing miracle recorded in the Gospel of Luke. Just by uttering the word of God miracles take place, The healing power of God is manifested through His Word whether spoken or written. God speaks to us in various ways and by believing His Word our lives gets transformed

God Bless.

DAILY MEDITATIONS   # 26, Thursday 22.12.11

Hannah, his ( Samuel's ) mother, approached Eli and said:
"Pardon, my lord!
As you live, my lord,
I am the woman who stood near you here, praying to the LORD.
I prayed for this child, and the LORD granted my request.
Now I, in turn, give him to the LORD;
as long as he lives, he shall be dedicated to the LORD."
She left Samuel there.

1Samuel 1:24-28

He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.

Luke 1: 46-56

Hannah was barren for a long time and she became the object of scorn before her husband's second wife who bore many children. Hannah was very much loved by her husband but all his love could not fill the void in Hannah's life. Finally Hannah approached God in her utter emptiness and sought His blessings  for a child.
So also Mother Mary glorifies God because her patient dependence on God was rewarded at the appropriate time. Though Mary was virtuous she never counted her virtue as reason enough for God to answer her prayer. God answers the prayers of the humble who come before Him with empty hands and a heart filled with love and an expectant faith.

May all our needs and desires be fulfilled this season when we approach the DIVINE INFANT with the same attitude of Hannah and the virgin Mary.

God Bless.

My lover speaks; he says to me,
"Arise, my beloved, my dove, my beautiful one,
and come!
"For see, the winter is past,
the rains are over and gone.
The flowers appear on the earth,
the time of pruning the vines has come,
and the song of the dove is heard in our land.
Arise, my beloved, my beautiful one,
and come!                                                                                       Song of Songs 2:8-14

 Blessed are you who believed
that what was spoken to you by the Lord
would be fulfilled."                                                                            Luke 1:45

The first reading graphically conveys God's romantic love for us. Each one of us is God's , most beautiful beloved, and hence there is nor reason for us to HAVE A LOW SELF-ESTEEM OF OURSELVES. We are much valued and precious no matter what the world says of us. Like any other human lover God also expects us to respond to His ardent love. Mary the virgin mother of Jesus generously responded by saying  'YES ' to God's request and believed in her heart the message announced to her by the angel Gabriel. She willingly and lovingly became the human bride of God to give birth and nurse the baby Jesus. All those who believe God's word are called  ' blessed ' and what God has promised in the Bible will certainly be fulfilled in their lives. It is better to believe in God's word than to believe in man's word. God has wonderful plans for each one of us !

God Bless

DAILY MEDITATIONS  # 24, Tuesday 20.12.11

Isaiah 7:10-14

" Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign:
the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and shall name him Emmanuel. "

Luke 1:26-38

" In the sixth month,
the angel Gabriel was sent from God
to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,
to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph,
of the house of David,
and the virgin's name was Mary.

Then the angel said to her,
"Do not be afraid, Mary,
for you have found favor with God.
Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,
and you shall name him Jesus."

Born of Mary, a Virgin

Mary

Prophecies: Seven hundred years before she was born, Mary was prophesied to be the mother of Christ. Isaiah wrote, “The Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14).

But Mary said to the angel,
"How can this be,
since I have no relations with a man?"
And the angel said to her in reply,
"The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
Therefore the child to be born
will be called holy, the Son of God."

And after the grandeur of the prophecy, this is the sad part recorded in Luke 2:7

"and she gave birth to her firstborn son.* She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn."

and in John 1:11

" He came to what was his own,

but his own people* did not accept him."

Now what about you and me ? Do we have a special place for Jesus in our hearts this Christmas ? Accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior means obeying his commandments. Jesus laid aside his divine glory and chose to be born in a manger and die on a cross. Jesus wants us to lay aside our pride and prejudices, and humble ourselves and accept His simplicity and His holiness in our lives.

God Bless.

First Reading

The woman bore a son and named him Samson.
The boy grew up and the LORD blessed him;
the Spirit of the LORD stirred him.                                          Judges 13:24-25a

Gospel

After this time his wife Elizabeth conceived,
and she went into seclusion for five months, saying,
"So has the Lord done for me at a time when he has seen fit
to take away my disgrace before others."                                            Luke 1:25

The above verses are selections from today's readings-- Judges 13:2-7,24-25a and Luke 1:5-25

God has a purpose for every person born in this world. But a majority of us feel most of the time that our lives seem to be meaningless. This is not only our perception but also the perception of others about us. Perhaps in the eyes of the world our roles are insignificant and goes unnoticed whereas others are destined to play more  important and dominant roles on the world stage. But we should always remember that God who created this world with so much precision has deliberately created each one of us as vital pieces in the jigsaw puzzle of his creation. If one piece in the puzzle goes missing then the whole picture becomes meaningless. This is how precious we are in the eyes of God however poor or useless we may appear to be for the present in our own eyes. Each one of us is created a Samson or John the Baptist in our own small spheres of life and God who has planted us in this world will take care to provide adequate water and other nutrients for our happy and fulfilling life according to His purpose.
Both Samson's mother and Elizabeth the mother of John the Baptist were barren until a long time. God fulfilled their desire and removed their disgrace at the appropriate time. Similarly God will touch the barrenness of our lives and soon bring cheer and fulfillment in our hearts and in the hearts of our loved ones this Christmas season of joy and hope.He comes to us as Jesus as our ever-loving and faithful God.

God Bless

DAILY MEDITATIONS # 22, Sunday, 18.12.11

DAILY MEDITATIONS  # 22, Sunday, 18.12.11

First Reading

2Sm. 7:1-5,8b-12,14a-16

The LORD also reveals to you
that he will establish a house for you.
And when your time comes and you rest with your ancestors,
I will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins,
and I will make his kingdom firm.
I will be a father to him,
and he shall be a son to me.
Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever before
Your throne shall stand forever till the end.

Second Reading

Rom. 16:25-27

according to the revelation of the mystery kept secret for long ages
but now manifested through the prophetic writings and,
according to the command of the eternal God,
made known to all nations to bring about the obedience of faith,
to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ
be glory forever and ever. Amen

Gospel Reading

Luke 1:26-38

"Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,
and you shall name him Jesus.
He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,
and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,
and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever,
and of his kingdom there will be no end."

King David desired to build a House for his loving God in gratitude. The God who replied to David :
"'It was I who took you from the pasture
and from the care of the flock
to be commander of my people Israel.
I have been with you wherever you went,
and I have destroyed all your enemies before you.
And I will make you famous like the great ones of the earth.

But God had the most wonderful plans for King David and for God's people. God had already planned in eternity that His   ' dwelling place '  will be in the loving hearts of all those who would be faithful to Him through Jesus Christ His only Son and a descendant of King David.

This is the mystery Paul speaks of in the Second Reading and this is the mystery that was fully revealed to us through the incarnation, beginning with Mother Mary.

The Virgin Mary was the first recipient of the Good News and Jesus is that  " GOOD NEWS " which we celebrate during Christmas. Just as God generously shares His son Jesus with us , He wants us to share our lives generously with others so that God may really dwell within us.

God Bless
