Saturday of the Thirty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Revelation 22:1-7
Psalm 95:1-2, 3-5, 6-7ab
Luke 21:34-36
A reflection on today's Sacred Scripture:
Be on guard!
Jesus admonishes us, "Be on guard lest your spirits become bloated with indulgence."
Every day the temptations to indulge become more plentiful. Every day we hear about what we are missing out on by not participating in many of the things of the world.
This world is a passing place. There are many good and wonderful things here, made for us and for our proper enjoyment in our time here. Proper enjoyment involves divorcing ourselves from desiring the thing for itself. We must enjoy the things of the world for the reminders they are of God and of what is to come. The pleasures of this world are trivial; the pleasure of the next eternal. Should we endanger that glorious possibility for a few moments of pleasure on earth?
What we find when we replace God with objects on Earth is a transitory delight, followed by an ashen bitterness. If we continue to focus on the object of delight, we become addicted and our image of God gradually drifts away.
The best thing to do is to enjoy this world for the glory of God, and enjoy the things of this world in their proper place, and look forward to the next world where everything we currently have will seem as dross - - mere paste jewelry.
