Monday of the First Week of Advent
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Isaiah 4:2-6
Psalm 122:1-2, 3-4b, 4cd-5, 6-7, 8-9
Matthew 8:5-11
A reflection on today's Sacred Scripture:
In today's Gospel, Jesus refers to "the banquet in the Kingdom of heaven."
(see Matthew 8:11)
I haven't ever experienced a really elegant banquet, but I have seen pictures of luxury hotels and their decked-out banquet rooms and it really is quite a sight.
Now, if ordinary mortals can take the fruits and goods of this earth and arrange them with such pleasing effects, what kind of banquet might the powers of heaven be able to create?
I know it is impossible to imagine, but wonderful, nevertheless, to try!
Think then, what pleases you the most and imagine it infinitely more enhanced.
What is most pleasing to your eyes? Outrageous flowers with colors and shapes of every sort? How about your ears? Is it the sound of a particular musical selection that most stirs you?
What is the scent you consider most lovely? Can you recall the taste of the most wonderful foods and beverages you have ever experienced?
Do you have some recollection of what it feels like to be totally comfortable? Like that feeling that makes you say "ahh" when you crawl into bed after a long and busy day?
The heavenly banquet will be all all of these things and much, much more, because we will be the guests of God whose extravagance has no limits and whose delight it is to please us!
