FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT...... 03.04.11
JOHN 9:1-41...... HE WENT OFF AND WASHED HIMSELF, AND CAME AWAY WITH HIS SIGHT RESTORED.
The 'Signs' of Jesus in the Gospel of John
- Water to wine (2:1-12)...................................... Jesus is the Lord of Nature.
- Healing of the official's son (4:43-54)............ Jesus is the Lord of Life.
- Healing a paralyzed man (5:1-15)................. Jesus is the Restorer of Lost Powers.
- Feeding 5000 (6:1-15)..................................... Jesus is our Food by which we Live.
- Walking on water (6:16-24)............................ Jesus is our Guide and Helper.
- Healing a man born blind (9:1-12)............... Jesus is our Light.
- Raising Lazarus from the dead (11:1-44)... Jesus is Lord of Eternal Life.
All the seven important signs worked by Jesus, reveal Him as God and are intended to promote faith and belief among whom he performed the miracles. Some believed and a great majority had their own reservations. The sixth 'sign' reveals that he is God and a remover of blindness and darkness in all those who believe in him. The blind-man obeyed Jesus and went off to the Pool of Si-loam to wash the paste from his eyes. Si-loam represents Jesus as the one who removes our physical, and spiritual blindness and demonic bondage and washes away our sins.In John's Gospel there is always a play between 'Light' and 'Darkness'. Light represents the all-powerful God and darkness represents the pervasive forces of 'Evil' in all creation. Though darkness may cloud our lives now and then, the final victory is obtained for us by Christ the 'Eternal Light' to all those who continue to place a trusting faith in him. It is Jesus who personifies the Laws of the Old Testament and restores them to their proper perspective for which they were originally intended by God. Hence Sabbath was established by God to honor him by doing the 'good works' which Christ did while he was on earth. Let us honor Christ by faithfully obeying the 'new commandment' he gave us in John 13:34 .."Let me give you a new commandment: Love one another. In the same way I loved you, you love one another. This is how everyone will recognize you are my disciples --- when they see the love you have for each other."
In our lives also God has performed so many 'signs'. Has it created in us a greater faith in him on a personal level ? Are we relating to Jesus as though he is our best friend ? The Apostles lives were transformed only when the Spirit of Jesus descended upon them after the Resurrection. Let us also prepare for the Pentecost during this Lenten season. Jesus is the only person we can ever trust in this world.
God Bless.
