DAILY MEDITATIONS # 14 Saturday 10.12.11
As they were coming down from the mountain,
the disciples asked Jesus,
"Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"
He said in reply, "Elijah will indeed come and restore all things;
but I tell you that Elijah has already come,
and they did not recognize him but did to him whatever they pleased.
So also will the Son of Man suffer at their hands."
Then the disciples understood
that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist. Mathew 17:9a, 10-13

John the Baptist came in the role of Elijah. Like Elijah he preached repentance and reconciliation. Both John and Elijah led an ascetic life and their type of preaching style was similar.However John is not a reincarnation of Elijah. The Bible does not teach this belief held in other religions.
It was prophesied in the Old Testament that the coming of the Messiah Jesus would be heralded by another prophet in the likeness of Elijah who was John the Baptist. However people could neither recognize John the Baptist the forerunner nor Jesus the Messiah because they were spiritually blind. To understand Bible truths we need the assistance of the Holy Spirit. Bible cannot be read just like any other book.
God Bless.
